This decision by the Democratic National Committee to block the publication of its own post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race appears remarkable but not surprising. Opposed to frank assessments, the Democrats' governing body behaves more like a publicity machine rather than an electoral entity committed to cultivating a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Culture of Conformity

Hesitant to break with the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has remained within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Making public an official autopsy could have demonstrated whether the leadership are interested to promote open debate about the missteps that enabled the former president to return to the White House. Yet, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there is little to understand from the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold fits a pattern to avoid uncomfortable facts. This mirrors a dynamic where virtually every elected Democrat in Congress acquiesced to an incumbent's decision for running for re-election right up until a catastrophic televised debate led to an exit.

At the same time, a significant majority of Democratic voters were consistently telling researchers of their opposition to the incumbent to be the nominee.

Financial Issues

An honest report might also investigate issues regarding where money went, such as what sums were directed to high-priced advisors and ad buyers during a campaign that burned through an enormous war chest over a few months.

The Larger Issue
