The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
