Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
