EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
